Olfactory Dysfunction in Parkinson’s Disease, Its Functional and Neuroanatomical Correlates

چکیده
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is known for its motor alterations, but the importance of non-motor symptoms (NMSs), such as olfactory dysfunction (OD), increasingly recognized. OD may manifest during prodromal period disease, even before appear. Therefore, it suggested that this symptom could be considered a marker PD. This article briefly describes PD, evolution knowledge about in prevalence NMS and role diagnosis PD progression, assessment olfaction patients with α-synuclein aggregates pathophysiology then some functional, morphological, histological alterations observed different structures related to system, epithelium, bulb, anterior nucleus, tract, piriform cortex, hippocampus, orbitofrontal amygdala. In addition, considering growing evidence suggests cerebellum also involved has been included work. Comprehending existing functional neuroanatomical relevant better understanding mechanisms behind neurodegenerative disorder.

Hysterical conversion disorders refer to functional neurological deficits such as paralysis, anaesthesia or blindness not caused by organic damage but associated with emotional "psychogenic" disturbances. Symptoms are not intentionally feigned by the patients whose handicap often outweighs possible short-term gains. Neural concomitants of their altered experience of sensation and volition are s...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder with the earliest clinical symptom of olfactory dysfunction, which is a potential clinical marker for AD severity and progression. However, many questions remain unanswered. This article reviews relevant research on olfactory dysfunction in AD and evaluates the predictive value of olfactory dysfunction for the epidemiological, path...

Prior to the onset of the cardinal motor features of idiop athic Parkinson‘s disease (PD), other manifestations of neurodegeneration such as olfactory dysfunction are often apparent. Characterizing these potential biomarkers of preclinical PD is particularly important in identifying individuals who will go on to develop disabling symptoms, and thus be good candidates for new neuroprotective str...
متن کاملVerbal Fluency in Parkinson’s disease: neuroanatomical correlates and functional networks modulated by noninvasive brain stimulation
Background: Verbal fluency relies on the coordinated activity between left frontal and temporal areas.Patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) present phonemic and semantic fluency deficits. Recent studiessuggest that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) enhances adaptative patterns of brain activitybetween functionally connected areas. Objective: The aimof this studywas ...

An olfactory function test in 18 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 10 age-matched control subjects was performed. Both detection and recognition thresholds were measured with five kinds of synthesized odorants (T & T olfactometry). Before each test, rhinoscopic inspections were performed to exclude subjects who could have respiratory hyposmia. Both detection and recognition thresholds ...
